I was just over excitedly rambling to starwall about how amazing precolumbian agriculture was with companion planting, biodiversity of crops to stop disease wiping them out, terraced farming in the Andes with different species bred to grow at different altitudes. white people fucking destroyed so many amazing methods of agriculture with huge monocultues and livestock that ravage an ecosystem in that they eat EVERYTHING and destroy it. Australia was very much the same but even more cool in how unique their agriculture was before white people literally made it into the desert it is now in just 200 years

it can't be overstated just how fucking bad colonialism has been in every aspect of history

amazing how 30,000 years ago in Australia aboriginal peoples had sustainable farming and made the continent into a fucking paradise, and now white people are suddenly like "WOAH you can plant more than one singular crop in one place????"

colonialism wiped native knowledge from existence that could have been key in the development of better production practices because they believed they were just naturally better and never thought to consider non white people could do something so complex due to the ideology of white supremacist colonialism. so sure, white boy keep going on about how much white people have given to history

like just read this
"The three crops benefit from each other. The maize provides a structure for the beans to climb, eliminating the need for poles. The beans provide the nitrogen to the soil that the other plants use, and the squash spreads along the ground, blocking the sunlight, helping prevent the establishment of weeds. The squash leaves also act as a "living mulch", creating a microclimate to retain moisture in the soil, and the prickly hairs of the vine deter pests. Corn, beans, and squash contain complex carbohydrates, essential fatty acids and all nine essential amino acids, allowing most Native American tribes to thrive on a plant-based diet"

that's such an amazing and sustainable way to grow things. there's no monoculture stripping the land of nutrients that's susceptible to being wiped out, it's water efficient, it doesn't require pesticides as it's has it's own natural defenses, it doesn't require industrial fertilisation that leads to eutrophication because it has it's own natural fertilisation

@CornishRepublicanArmy what makes maize+squash+beans even more amazing is that none of them are natural. These three crop plants were genetically engineered from wild species by the residents of these continents over a timespan of several thousand years to arrive at the plants we know today.

@CornishRepublicanArmy woooahhh. ugh.
that's what you got for considering people different from you "savages" :<

@CornishRepublicanArmy read it as crops and thought to myself "only the rich benefit from cops"

@CornishRepublicanArmy three sisters. I've been growing my crops this way for a generation.

@CornishRepublicanArmy I don’t remember where I read it as it was years ago, but indigenous stewardship had most of the east to central side of the US thick with... get this...... twelve FEET of topsoil. 3 inches is considered great these days.

@CornishRepublicanArmy ive only ever grown the three sisters like that; together. sadly it only works if you are tending by hand and without machinery. THAT is why this isn't done commercially.
